Bhitarkanika
Been there recently?
After the Sunderbans, Bhitarkanika is the second-largest mangrove ecosystem in India. Many people like to call it the mini-Amazon for its resemblance with Brazil’s iconic jungles. A network of creeks and canals that receive floodwater from the rivers Brahmani, Baitarani, Dhamra, and Patasala create the National Park’s distinctive environment. Adventure-seekers will enjoy boat rides in the creeks and canals, while wildlife lovers will be wooed with the region’s flora and fauna. The largest population of the critically endangered saltwater crocodiles is found in Bhitarkanika. The saltwater crocodile is the region’s top predator, but the park is also home to many other reptiles, including water monitor lizards and pythons, to name a few. Numerous species, including deer, hyenas, wild boar, etc., as well as migrating birds that make Bhitarkanika their winter home giving the ecosystem a bright colour.
