Alibaug
Been there recently?
Alibag, often spelt Alibaug, is a coastal community and municipal council in Maharashtra, India’s Raigad District. It is located south of Mumbai and serves as the district’s administrative centre. In the past, Bene Israel Jews lived in Alibag and the villages around it. Jewish historian Esther David from India asserts that when their ship capsized here, Jews who were fleeing persecution by the Roman Empire came to the area more than 2000 years ago. Alibag, which is now a part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, is located 143 kilometres from Pune and 96 kilometres from Mumbai. It is a sacred location for the goddess Shree Padmakshi Renuka, and thousands of devotees come to worship there every day also known as the Kokan goddess.
